Niyamma is a play on the Sanskrit word “Niyam”. Niyam means principles. Niyamma Therapy is all about finding a set of practices personalized to our own lifestyles and circumstances which help to live a happy, healthy, and liberated state of being. Everyone will have different principles which they follow, or which work for them, these will be unique to them.
At Niyamma Therapy, a variety of modalities and approaches are used. Each practitioner brings their own theoretical orientation to the table, however generally speaking, at Niyamma there is an emphasis on Client-Focused Therapy.
Within Client Focused Therapy, the client is the expert on their life, and the therapist is there to guide and support them in both identifying and fulfilling their goals.
Additionally, Niyamma Therapy works with modalities such as ( but not limited to):
Narrative Therapy- which helps the client explore the narrative of their life and circumstances which shaped their thoughts/behaviours and allows for the therapist to introduce new perspectives of the same story. DBT - which is an evidence-based approach that helps people learn/use new skills & regulate emotions to build lives they feel are worth living, with a focus on both change and acceptance
ACT- which is tye of mindful psychotherapy that helps you stay focused on the present moment and accept thoughts and feelings without judgment.
Schema Therapy- which is an integrative approach that brings together elements from cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment and object relations theories, and Gestalt and experiential therapies.
Niyamma Therapy strives to ensure a warm, judgement free and safe space for clients to navigate through their thoughts, concerns and/or life challenges.
Niyamma Therapy welcomes clients from all walks of life, of all communities and cultures, and prides itself on culturally aware therapy, in which the client can truly be “understood”.
A life-long passion for helping and healing others has led Devyani to pursue a career in counselling. Devyani started her career wanting to be a school guidance counsellor but felt she should first gain experience working with children. With an undergraduate degree in Sociology paired with an Early Childhood Education Diploma, Devyani began working with children and at-risk youth.
Experiencing the day to day lives of these children, supporting them and helping them navigate their day to day life by supporting them through challenging and rewarding times. Guiding them through questions they had about "fitting in" or their experiences thus far.
She came to realize that many of these children would go off to middle school and high school and would still need a supportive environment in other to thrive. This led Devyani to pursue further education in the field of Mental Health and Addictions. Many of the children Devyani worked with, were exposed to the “street life” as they called it and expressed that there was peer-pressure to try different drugs or engage in certain activities which they were not comfortable with.
Devyani went on to work in the field of Addictions, working with both the inner-city population and in the private sector with more affluent clients. It was here that she really understood the meaning of “meeting clients where they’re at”. Everyone has a different journey, different circumstances and no-one way is the right way. This solidified Devyani’s “client centered approach” to counselling.
As someone of South Asian Origin, Devyani understands what it means to try to balance the duality of the North American lifestyle with opposing cultural norms, and the anxieties and hardships which may come with this. However, these experiences shaped her world-view and ability to understand the importance of Mental Health support in the South Asian community (and other cultures where Mental Health is not given priority).
Now, as an RP-Q, Addictions Counsellor, and Certified Life-Coach Devyani works with clients from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, who struggle with various mental health concerns, physical trauma, and emotional obstacles. Devyani is both DBT and Gottman informed, and these influence her approach, but sessions are catered and customized based on clients & are case specific.
Devyani believes that it is the client who knows their situation best, and the purpose of the counsellor/therapist is to guide and support the client to identify and fulfil their goals to live as their best possible self.
Growing up as a first-generation Canadian of South Asian descent and as a woman of color, she journeyed through the maze of identity, facing the challenges that come with navigating intersecting cultures. For Malavikka, this has been a deeply personal experience – one filled with highs and lows, moments of clarity and confusion.
Through her own trials and triumphs, she's come to intimately understand the rollercoaster of emotions, the uncertainty, and the longing for someone who truly gets it. This journey has shaped not only who she is, but also how she approaches therapy. It's instilled in her a profound empathy and authenticity – a genuine understanding of the struggles you may be facing.
So, when she says "I'm here to support you"- know that it's not just a professional commitment; it's a deeply personal one, rooted in her own experiences.
Malavikka understands firsthand the importance of having a safe and supportive space to explore one's thoughts and emotions. She is there to offer her client's a sanctuary, where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
